There are quite a few choices and what you want to start with will depend on if your child is a true beginner with no musical knowledge or not and whether or not you want to start off with some musical theory and teaching you child how to read music; keep in mind, learning to read music is usually much easier if your child also has a keyboard to practice on.
Christian Music Curriculum
Bob Jones Music: A comprehensive music curriculum, including the music. This is a nice program for parents who don't know anything about music but want to include it in their homeschool studies. A soprano recorder is required for grades 3-4 and the highschool level programs are more intstrument specific and require an instrument.
Pfeiffer House: Pfeiffer House Music has made it possible, easy, and fun to teach K-6 music, even if you are not musically inclined.
All you need to do is follow the steps in the lessons, and with the aid of the included audio CD, the worksheets and flash cards, you are fully equipped and capable of teaching music
Specific Instruments
There are some programs available such as Progressive Music Courses for Your Beginners Series. The programs are available for guitar, keyboard, piano, recorder and percussion. This program is recommended for grades K-4.
Teach yourself to play ___________ series is available for guitar, harmonica, piano and recorder. This program is for slightly older grades (5+) and comes with a CD and CD-ROM for reinforcement.
So, you see, there is really no excuse for not teaching your child an instrument .... the resources are abundant, and an online search will reveal even more, I am sure. Just imagine how wonderful it will sound to hear your child sit down and play a beautiful song on the piano or guitar in a few years.
